How long is a SIM only contract?
SIM-only deals tend to be more flexible than phone contracts and usually are for a period of 12 months.
Because you’re not paying for the costs associated with the physical device, they’re also usually much cheaper.
Some providers will offer longer-term SIM-only deals (18 months) or will offer Pay as You Go monthly deals.
It’s worth checking what kind of offers you can get depending on how much you have as a budget, and how long of a contract you’re willing to sign.
Can I use any handset on a SIM only contract?
This depends on a few things.
If your business phone is locked to a particular provider then you’ll only be able to use a SIM card from that provider in the handset.
You can get the business phone unlocked if you want to keep your current phone but change to a new provider.
Just be aware of how this will affect any warranties or guarantees if a third party is altering the phone for you.
If you already have an unlocked business phone or are staying with your current contract provider then yes, you’ll simply be able to put the new SIM card in your existing phone and it will work straight away.
Can I keep the same phone number on a SIM only contract
Yes.
If you stay with the same provider, like O2, you’ll be able to simply transfer your existing phone number over to your new contract.
If you’re having your SIM card delivered, it will be preset with your existing phone number so it’s ready to use straight away.
If you switch providers for your new SIM-only deal, then you can still keep your existing number.
You will need to get a PAC (Porting Authorisation Code) from your existing provider to give to your new provider so they can transfer your phone number to the new SIM card.
Getting a PAC is free and easy.
Why would I get a SIM only contract?
If you don’t need a phone upgrade you could save money by switching to a SIM only contract for your business phone.
If you remain on the same phone deal at the end of your phone contract, you’re still paying costs associated with the handset.
With a SIM-only deal you only pay for the minutes, texts and data you use, so the price is generally lower.
If you wanted to keep paying around the same price you’d be able to increase your data allowance, as well as minutes and texts.
Otherwise, you could receive the same minutes, texts and data as your current contract, but for less money.
