2G and 3G Switch-Off: What UK Mobile Users Need to Know Get All Offers

After more than two decades of keeping the UK connected, 2G and 3G networks are being switched off. Mobile providers — including O2, EE, Vodafone, and Three — are retiring their older technologies to make way for faster, more secure 4G and 5G services.

Why are 2G and 3G being turned off?

Both networks were revolutionary in their time, but today they’re inefficient and take up valuable spectrum needed for newer technologies. The equipment is harder to maintain, and modern 4G and 5G networks can carry data faster and more reliably — while using less energy.

When will it happen?

  • 3G switch-off: Most networks will complete this by the end of 2025.
  • 2G switch-off: Expected to follow by 2026–2027, though timelines vary slightly by network.

The UK Government and Ofcom have confirmed that all 2G and 3G will be gone by 2030 at the latest.

Update: Virgin Media O2 announce that Scotland is next to make the move

Virgin Media O2 has announced that its 3G network will be withdrawn in Scotland from 5 November 2025, starting with areas in the east such as Aberdeen and Dundee.
While most customers already use 4G or 5G devices and won’t need to do anything, anyone with an older 3G-only handset should plan to upgrade soon. Once 3G is turned off, calls, texts and data on these older phones will no longer work.
This rollout follows successful switch-offs across parts of England and Wales and marks another key step towards a fully modernised network.

How to check if you’re affected

If your phone only shows “3G” or “H” at the top of the screen — and never “4G” or “5G” — it might be time to upgrade. Older handsets (especially pre-2016 models) may stop connecting to voice and data once the older networks are retired.

If you use devices like alarms, payment terminals, or trackers that rely on 2G or 3G SIMs, they’ll also need replacing with 4G-compatible hardware.

The benefits of upgrading

  • Better coverage and fewer dropped calls
  • Clearer voice quality with 4G VoLTE calling
  • Faster data speeds for apps, maps, and video
  • Improved security and battery efficiency

The bottom line

2G and 3G served their purpose — but today’s networks are more capable, greener, and ready for the future. Upgrading now means you’ll stay connected seamlessly as the UK transitions to all-4G and 5G.
