Virgin Media O2 has announced a groundbreaking new partnership with Starlink in a first-of-its-kind collaboration in the UK aimed at boosting mobile network coverage in rural and remote areas.
The agreement will see Virgin Media O2 launch a new service called O2 Satellite, which leverages Starlink’s constellation of over 650 low-Earth-orbit satellites to deliver mobile connectivity directly to users in places where traditional mobile signal is weak or nonexistent.
O2 Satellite will initially provide messaging and data services, automatically switching on when users travel into coverage “blackspots” such as remote countryside, coastal zones and hiking trails. This means customers can stay connected for essentials like messaging (text and WhatsApp), maps, weather and app-based services even outside normal mobile network reach.
The partnership supports Virgin Media O2’s broader goal of expanding its UK mobile footprint — aiming to cover more than 95% of the country’s landmass within a year of the service going live. O2 Satellite builds on the operator’s existing rural network improvements and reflects a major step toward closing the digital divide between urban and rural communities.
Internal trials of the technology are already underway, with the public rollout expected in early 2026. More details on pricing and device compatibility will be shared closer to launch.
