Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Z Fold 5: Key Differences Explained

Samsung unveiled its next-generation foldable smartphones, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5, at its Unpacked event. These new devices follow closely in the footsteps of their predecessors, the Flip 4 and Fold 4, offering two distinct designs – folding horizontally or flipping vertically. But the differences between these two models go far beyond their folding mechanism. Let’s delve into the key distinctions and similarities to help you choose the best folding smartphone for your needs.

Price and Specs

The smaller Z Flip 5 has the lowest cost to purchase, while the larger Z Fold 5 can be almost twice as expensive The Flip 5 comes with either 256GB or 512GB of storage and 8GB of RAM, while the Z Fold 5 offers 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB of storage, plus 12GB of RAM. Both models use the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy processor. However, unlike the Galaxy Tab S9 tablets, neither phone has a microSD card slot for additional storage.

Size and Design

When folded, the Z Flip 5 measures just 3.35 by 2.83 by 0.59 inches, and when unfolded, it expands to 6.50 by 2.83 by 0.27 inches. The Z Fold 5, on the other hand, is almost as big folded as the Z Flip 5 is unfolded, and when opened, it expands to 6.10 by 5.11 by 0.24 inches. Both devices use Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 for the outer screens and back panels and carry an IPX8 water-resistance rating.

Screens

The main screen on the Z Flip 5 is a 6.7-inch, 22:9 panel with a resolution of 2,640 by 1,080 pixels, while the Z Fold 5’s 7.6-inch main screen has a 21.6:18 aspect ratio and a resolution of 2,176 by 1,812 pixels. Both main screens are Dynamic AMOLED 2X panels with 120Hz adaptive refresh rates. The cover screens, however, are where the two phones really diverge. The Z Fold 5’s cover screen is almost as large as the Z Flip 5’s main screen, while the Z Flip 5’s cover screen is more suited for widgets and other information.

Cameras

The Galaxy Z Fold 5 boasts a triple-camera stack, including a 50MP f/1.8 wide-angle sensor, a 12MP f/2.2 ultra-wide sensor, and a 10MP f/2.4 telephoto lens. The Z Flip 5’s camera stack is more modest, with two rear-facing 12MP sensors.

Battery and Charging

Both the Galaxy Z Flip 5’s 3,700mAh battery and the Fold 5’s 4,400mAh cell support 25W wired charging, 15W wireless charging, and offer reverse wireless charging.

Both the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Z Fold 5 offer unique features and capabilities. Your choice between the two will largely depend on your specific needs and preferences.
