Virgin Media O2 has rolled out significant upgrades to its 4G and 5G mobile network across more than 40 major motorways and A roads throughout the UK — covering almost 600 miles of strategic routes including the M1, M4, M6, M8 and M25.
These improvements are designed to deliver more reliable mobile coverage for drivers, helping with everything from navigation and charging apps to emergency calls and breakdown services reported Virgin Media O2
This initiative is part of Virgin Media O2’s wider £700 million Mobile Transformation Plan, aimed at boosting connectivity across both urban and rural areas. As well as upgrading existing infrastructure, the programme includes enhanced 4G coverage at 311 sites and the construction of 338 new 5G sites, which together give road users a stronger, more dependable signal on the move.
Why does this matter? As electric vehicle (EV) adoption accelerates, connectivity is becoming just as important as charging infrastructure. Research from Virgin Media O2’s national polling shows that many EV drivers now fear losing mobile signal — a concern dubbed “signal anxiety” — even more than “range anxiety”. Being able to locate charging points, access real-time updates and make payments via apps depends on having a solid mobile connection — especially on long journeys.
To complement these network upgrades, the Liberty Global-backed charging operator Believ is deploying up to 30,000 new public EV charging points across the country, including many in areas where the mobile signal has been strengthened. Reliable coverage makes it easier for drivers to find, access and pay for these chargers seamlessly.
Virgin Media O2 plans to extend the optimisation programme further, with additional improvements slated for key routes such as the A14, M20 and A75, making Britain’s roads even more future-ready for connected vehicles.
